Assessment Philosophy

While doing assessment I believe that using as many assessment tools as possible is the best practice to ensure that as a teacher you have more material to assess on, thus making the final grade more reflective of the students’ knowledge. In addition to using as much assessment as possible, it is equally important to provide as much feedback as possible for your students. The more feedback you provide your students the better understanding they will gain. In my past experience as a student in elementary and high school, teachers would give a grade but would rarely leave that much feedback. I believe it is essential if you want to see your students grow that you provide quality comments. In doing so your students will know what they did correct, as well where they could improve. Every assessment tool definitely has its pros along with its cons. This is another reason why it is important to use a wide range of assessments. For example a unit test can be affective in grading your students as it will give you a good benchmark of where the class is at, as well it can be focused on the area in which you feel your students should know. On the flip side, tests can become very problematic for a number of reasons such as, it does not take into consideration of student growth, it favours students who have good memory versus students who know the content but just do not have as good of memory and many people have test anxiety. This is why through my personal experience; I believe that doing a presentation while using inquiry is the best practice. I understand that some students will become very nervous while presenting which is why a teacher must be flexible with presentations. They should allow many options to fit certain student’s needs. These could include ideas such as a write up, a recording of themselves, a pamphlet, an individual presentation, or using technology. In conclusion I believe the best ways to assess your students is by using as many forms of assessment as possible to best analyze your students and their knowledge. In addition by using many forms of assessments this will also help the student grow, as they will be able to learn in a variety of ways. As well teachers need to be flexible to meet all of the varying students needs.

I really believe that by doing ongoing assessment teachers will gather a plethora of information on their students. Teacher’s will be able to then modify their lesson to fit the specific needs of that particular class. Teachers will have to adapt their lessons accordingly based off of the assessment they are receiving, “Classroom assessments do more than just measure learning. What we assess, how we assess, and how we communicate the results send a clear message to students about what is worth learning, how it should be learned, and how well we expect them to perform” (Linking Classroom Assessment with Student Learning 2013). In addition to finding out what your students enjoy more / less, then as a teacher you can begin to adapt the themes of your classrooms to ensure that all students remain engaged as well as motivated to do well in all of their classes. A quote that I found that is similar to my values is, “Classroom assessment is among an instructor’s most essential educational tools. When properly developed and interpreted, assessments can help teachers better understand what their students are learning” (Linking Classroom Assessment with Student Learning 2013). I agree with this statement. It would make no sense to try and battle with your student’s everyday and teach ideas that do not resonate with them. With that being said I understand that there is still a curriculum that needs to be followed so you can’t just touch do topics that are fun but provide no relevance. Rather I am trying to argue that you can always accommodate your lessons so that they will better suit your student’s needs and will stick with them. For example during my puberty lesson, when I was challenging gender norms, I used two videos based off of what I had heard in the classroom earlier. Earlier in the week I heard another student make fun of the other student (in a playful way) that he throws like a girl. As a result I decided to show the above video as it was able to connect with some students. Many of the females in the class had also experienced similar experiences as the stereotypes that were being said in the video. The other video was intended to show the students that regardless of your “gender” you are capable of anything. The video shows NHL superstar Jeff Skinner, who was formerly a figure skater. In the video Jeff talks about how he was made fun of by some teammates and opponents because he was also in figure skating. The video was inspiring and showed students that there are no limitations and regardless of stereotypes they have heard they can do anything and be confident in doing so.  Both videos were relevant to what students have experienced in their lifetime, which I believe will make it more memorable for the students. Finally when you are doing your final assessment on students it is important to keep a number of things in mind such as, making it relevant, accurate and appropriate. In doing so students will not be tricked by any question that is being asked and will be able to not only get a good mark on the summative assessment but they will be able to remember this for the future and will be able to use this knowledge in future areas of their life. By being able to connect with the students I believe that students will be set up for lifetime success as they will be able to remember all of these teachings far after they graduate and will be able to apply all of this knowledge for years, and even decades to follow.
